새외근황(塞外近況) 22

결국 누구나 스스로의 포로일 따름이다

수용소에서처럼 탈출을 감행해 보아도

포박당해 다시 붙들려 오는 곳은 언제나

황폐한 먼지 날리는 스스로의 마당 안쪽

되돌아 오면 그 마당은 전보다 더 비좁고

더럽게 방치된 것처럼 보이기 마련이다

그 자리에 서서 뒤돌아 보면 어떤 탈출도

원치 않는 임신으로 마감된 불장난처럼

무슨 고상한 꿈을 품었든 낯 뜨거울 따름

나와 나의 수용소와 나의 탈출 모두에게

그 자리에서 삭고 싶을 만큼 미안할 따름

강도처럼 침입해 주인 행세 하는 미안함

그 흉폭함이 어디서 비롯되는지 모른 채

누구나 결국 스스로의 포로일 따름이다

Sonnet from Abroad

We all are none but prisoners of our own

as from a gulag our escapes are plied

inside this barren camp where dusts are blown

though always apprehended, bound and tied

Upon each capture more this camp would seem

confined and foul, abandoned and unsung

And those attempts to run away we deem

as pointless as our reckless love of young

Though noble were the dreams we had, we blush

being sorry for ourselves and our escapes,

we rather wish to vanish in a rush

Regrets like thugs intrude in varying shapes

From where their violence rises unbeknown

we all are none but prisoners of our own
